Killed in Action

  • Moran, Frances   Private.   Lenoir Braves.    28 August 1861.   Age: 60. Enlisted 9 June 1861.

  • Mourning, J. N.    Private.   Tar River Boys.   29 August 1861.   Age: 18. Enlisted 26 April 1861.

  • Stroud, John.        Private.   Lenoir Braves.   28 August 1861.   Age: 50. Enlisted 8 August 1861.

  • Tindall, Curtis.     Private.   Lenoir Braves.   29 August 1861.   Age: 35. Enlisted 9 June 1861.

At least two more men died on 28 August 1861. Two bodies were found in the outbuildings of Fort Clark by the Federals after the Confederates retreated to Fort Hatteras. These dead men were most likely members of either the Tar River Boys or the Lenoir Braves. Existing company records only list the four above. Tindall died en route to New Bern aboard the C.S.S. Winslow. Most newspaper accounts place the number of killed at 7.
